Space Data teams for wireless smart grid communications - Boston Business Journal:

Chandler-based Space Data announced the plan Monday to offedr up a portion of the wirelesd spectrum it owns to be used in conjunctio with equipment fromMenlo Calif.-based Full Spectrum. The two companies say the deal will allow utilities to ownprivate wide-area networks to provide commands to smar grids. “The combination of our high-powered frequencies with state-of-the-art WiMad technology provide utilities with a dedicated private broadbanrwireless system,” said Jerry Knoblach, CEO of Spacew Data. For several years, Space Data has been developing a systekm of wireless communications using weather balloons to carryequipment aloft, providingb a wide area of coverage.
The companyy also has been providing communications for several yearsa in theutility sector. Smart gridzs are the latest application of technologyu inthe nation’s powerd system. They will transform the national power grid into one that is more allowing it to deliver more powefr to areas of the country thatneed it. The two companiea believe their product would allowe grid operators to control distributionn remotely through awireless network. “In terms of grid automation, much of the focuss to date has been directed toward automatic meter readinfgand control.
However, real-time command and controp of higher-level grid devices are of equal, if not importance in the drive for overall grid saidStewart Kantor, CEO of Full Spectrum.
