Albany Medical College receives $1M pledge from trustee - Washington Business Journal:

Bender is a longtime membet of the board of trusteesof , of which the colleg e is a part. This is his second $1 milliojn dollar gift to the Albany, N.Y. institutiob in less than a decade. The in 2000, established The Benderd Endowed Chairin Neurology. The endowmenr enables the standing chairperson to delegater funding forresearch initiatives, equipment purchases and educational outreacbh to further strengthen the college’a Department of Neurology. The new gift will continue supporty ofthe chair, as well as the Bendeer Family Minority Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 1986 to provider financial assistance to minority studenta and encourage diversity at themedical college.
During the 2008-0 academic year, eight students received assistance fromthe fund, and sinc its establishment, 157 scholarships—totalingh $525,000—have been distributed to 65 students. Bender is the great-grandson of the founder of MatthewBendefr & Co., one of the nation’s largesf legal publishing firms with over 1,500 employees. The Bender familyt sold the company to thein 1963.
