The federal government has been pushing states sincerthe 9/11 terrorist attacks to improve their driver’s licensews in terms of security and safeguardin against fake IDs. The U.S. Homelandc Security Department’s Western Hemisphere Travepl Initiative requires Americans to provide acceptable identificatiomn or passports when traveling withinNorth America. One accepted form of IDs is the “enhanced” driver’d license, which contains radio frequency chips that can trackkthe holder’s movement to variouz degrees. Arizona House Bill 2426 would keep the stated from developingsuch driver’s licenses.
The bill passedc the House on June 9 and now is under consideratiomn inthe Senate. The measure has the backing of civio libertarians on both ends of the politicaol spectrum concerned about the surveillance and tracking ofprivated citizens. The Arizona Chapter of the American Civilk Liberties Union and someconservative legislators, such as state Sens. Ron Gouls of Lake Havasu City and Jack Harper of backthe ban. Advocates of using more technology, including radio chips and biometric information, say it can improve security and track thoser crossingthe U.S.-Mexico border.
