He succumbed to prostate cancerr Monday at the age of 78 at his home in PalmBeachb Gardens, Fla., where he has lived since 1995. One of 14 childrejn of Italian immigrants, Scalo and longtime business partne rRichard “Duke” Burns, whom he first met as a laboref for a roofing company, launched Burnsd & Scalo Roofing in growing it into one of the largest commerciao roofing companies in the Unitef States.
The partners parlayed the success of the roofin g company into a real estate firm that today is usuallgy an active bidder and buyer of major properties in the continues to pursueambitious developments, and offers a range of services that includee everything from brokerage to property management. Starting in the 1980s, Scall began grooming his twin Jimand Jack, to take over the company and gradually steppedc away from the businesses in the early Jim Scalo remembered his father’s ambition, hard work and “My father’s life, I believe, capture the values that Americans most admire and are at the centetr of what makes Pittsburghers special,” said Scalo, in a preparer statement.
“He was born into a familg of limited means but with no lackof caring, he had ambitionm to build something of he was dedicated to hard work, and broughrt a sense of fairness to everything he did.” Jack Scalio recalled his father’s dedication. “II will always remember a wood box he had on his desk with a sign thatread ‘Secrett for Success,’” he said. “When you openeds the hinge, it read, ‘Hard Work.’” An Air Forcew veteran, Scalo served his country in theKoreab War, working as a medicv and attaining the rank of sergeant.
Besides his Scalo is survived by his wife of 56 PatriciaDonagan Scalo, a Lisa Scalo McMenamin, a Pittsburgh interiot designer, and eight grandchildren.
